Absolutely.  We encourage families to visit Leaning Lodge. The hut is warm and has a great kid fiendly toilet. Children under 5 stay free and children from 5-17 are half price.  Depending on conditions, the walk in to the hut is suitable for teenages.  With vehicle (4WD only) access, reasonably close to the hut,  young children can and do visit the hut.

No dogs are not allowed. Leaning Lodge sits in the DOC estate, and DOC explicitly state that dogs are not allowed. The area around the hut  has populations of rare skinks, weta's and moth species.  

There is an alpine stream a few metres to the south of the hut that flows year round.    In common with all remote huts, it is recommended that drinking water is boiled.

Yes there is reasonable mobile reception from the hut. We also provide solar powered charging facilities.

Camping in the area is permitted. However there is a distinct lack of flat areas.  If you do camp, and use the hut faciliutes, such as  the toilet, we request that you pay the $5 day use fee.

No there is not firewood and fires are explicitly banned by DOC.  Fire represents one of the greatest threats to the hut and the Rock and Pillar Range environment. Under no circumstances should fires be lit.

No.  Visitors are responsible for bringing their own stoves and other cooking neccessities.  We do provide cleaning materials, but not dish washing liquid.  There is a sink in the hut, with a proper drainage system.

Whilst it varies from year to year, you can expect snow from June until well into November.  During the winter months, the Kinvara Track (the main route to Leaning Lodge)  is generally not accessible by vehicle.

No.  Under good conditions and with an appropriately equipped 4WD vehicle, it is possible to drive  to within 10-15 minute walk to the hut.  See the guide on how to get there for details.
